From Humble Beginnings to Industry Leadership
Electro-Mechanical Products, Inc. (EMP) was founded in 1972 by Doug Williams, a former Honeywell engineer, as a small machine shop servicing local customers along Colorado’s Front Range. Under Doug’s leadership, EMP built a strong customer base, particularly in the medical equipment and electronics industries. By 1982, the company had grown to $600,000 in annual sales with 12 employees operating Bridgeport mills and manual lathes.
In 1983, Doug retired and sold EMP to Alden Armington and Tom Goyne. Just two years later, the company outgrew its original location and moved into a larger, 10,000 square foot facility. Under Alden and Tom’s direction, EMP doubled its sales to $1.2 million by 1985. By 1989, the team had grown to 25 skilled machinists and support personnel, and EMP began integrating its first CNC machines into production.
Growth Through Precision
In 1989, Gene Jaeger acquired EMP. Over the next decade, EMP expanded its footprint and sharpened its focus as a dedicated CNC Contract Manufacturer. In 1995, EMP relocated to a 30,000 square foot facility, enabling further market expansion, equipment upgrades, and even international shipments. By 1999, EMP employed 105 people and had begun to carve out its reputation for precision machining excellence.
A New Chapter Begins
In 2000, EMP transitioned to new ownership under David Morris (CEO), Dave Wolenski (President), and a small group of minority shareholders. Notably, Tom Goyne remained on EMP’s board of directors. Under this new leadership, EMP broadened its capabilities to include the designing and manufacturing of thermal management products, positioning itself as a leader in next-generation thermal solutions.
Over the following 25 years, thermal management became the heart of EMP’s value proposition. In 2012, to accommodate continued growth, EMP moved into its current 51,000 square foot headquarters in Lakewood, Colorado.
